History of Bridgewater NJ

The area that is currently known as the township of Bridgewater NJ was bought from a local Lenape Native American tribe. In 1749, it was chartered by George II of Great Britain, and the official incorporation of the town took place on 21st February, 1798. The township happened to be named after Bridgwater, which is a town located in the English county of Somerset.

The township of Bridgewater was mainly popular as a farming community till the 1960s. Due to the riots in Plainfield and Newark that took place in 1967, several of the residents from those respective places migrated to Bridgewater, thereby increasing its population.
