History of Chatham, NJ

The land that eventually became Chatham was originally a part of the Province of East Jersey. It was from the members of the Lenni Lenape and Minsi members that the Indian rights to Chatham were bought from in 1680. The individuals of this tribe went fishing and hunting in the area and all the farming they did happened on the lands of their settlements. The area on which Chatham currently lies was then connected with other settlements in the given area through safe passages than ran across swamps, valleys, and mountains of the respective portion of the Watchung Mountains.

The Lenape land was bought by the British in 1680 on which the very first European settlement was made by John Day in 1710. Chatham was situated in the area that the English had named as Morris Township. The landing in that area was utilized by the Lenape whenever they were on their way to the Hudson River. This is what later on became Route 24 and led to Chester, Madison, Mendham, and Morristown. It came to be known as Main Street later on.

The village was named “Chatham” in 1773 in honor of William Pitt, who was the first Earl of Chatham and also a part of the British Parliament.
