History of Dumont, NJ

Dumont was initially incorporated in 1894 as the Borough of Schraalenburgh. The borough was named after its first mayor, Dumont Clarke, in 1898, who was the president of the American Exchange Bank. In order to run the borough during his first year, Dumont Clarke put in $200 along with six councilmen. A host of things were banned and prohibited under the first ordinances enacted within Dumont NJ, such as swine, sheep, horses, goats, and cattle being prohibited from being pastured on any sidewalk or street.
The land that is now Dumont NJ previously belonged to the Tappan Indians. They resided around Bergenfield and northward of Bergenfield. The Tappans ended up granting 7500 acres of land to a French Huguenot. This land stretched from the Tenakill Creek to the Hackensack River, and came to be called "Schraalenburgh", which translates to ‘scraggly hill’ in Dutch. These Dutch residents, who lived mainly in stone farmhouses, were associated with the Dutch Reformed Church.
Once the railroads opened post the Civil War, numerous strong families ended up moving to the Northern Valley region. The first line running through the Schraalenburgh Valley, from Ridgefield Park to Tappan, initiated in 1873. Developers and commuters flocked to the borough, as a result of which Dumont was officially incorporated in 1894. The establishment of Camp Merritt along Dumont’s eastern border led to an increase in population in 1917. The public school system officially began in Dumont NJ in 1800. Dumont High School was founded in 1932.
