History of Holmdel NJ

The township of Holmdel was formed on 23rd February, 1857 due to an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The origin of the township’s name seems blurry, but some do suggest that it was named in honor of the early settlers of the area in question, the Holmes family. Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias, working at Holmdel’s Bell Labs, contributed to providing some evidence of the Big Bang. They also went on to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics for the said contributions.

Holmdel also witnessed some work on laser cooling done by Steven Chu, who was a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics as well. It was in 1931 that Bell Labs saw its first work on radio astronomy, thanks to the engineer named Karl Guthe Jansky.
