History of Leonia NJ

During the American Revolutionary War, Leonia was recognized as a part of the English Neighborhood. It is from this that the name of the neighboring place, Englewood, was derived. Settled by the English and Dutch farmers in 1668, it happens to be one of the oldest communities both in the county as well as the state. Leonia started off as a farming community, and since it’s located so close to New York, the borough also witnessed a lot of influence in terms of academics and art.

The late 19th century saw the agricultural industry in Leonia NJ go through cultural and economic growth, and this is when the train service was introduced, too. In 1865, the town leaders chose the name ‘Leonia’ to honor Charles Lee, who was an American Revolutionary War General. The borough of Fort Lee was named after him as well.
