History of Marlboro NJ

Although this particular information calls for some debate, but the first known inhabitants of Marlboro NJ were the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. Between the period of 1497 to 1609, four European explorers, named John Cabot, Giovanni de Verrazano, Estevan Gomez, and Henry Hudson claimed this particular land for England (1497), France (1524), Spain (1525), and Holland (1609) respectively. The Lenni Lenape leader sold the land to the initial European proprietors.

George Keith was the one to rule the initial settlers of the area. Known as the Quakers, they created a town known as “Topanemus”, post which a cemetery and meetinghouse were created on something that is now known as “Topanemus Road”. Rev. George Keith was the Surveyor-General and also the first leader of the church.

The prevalence of marl in the area is what gave Marlboro its name. First discovered in 1768, marl was utilized in farms in plenty, and the marl pits were also displayed from 1889 on the maps as a dirt road off of Hudson Street.
