History of Montville NJ

The area where Montville NJ currently lies was originally settled by the Lenape tribes. New Amsterdam’s Dutch farmers came into the area in 1710. U.S. Route 202, which was then known as ‘the early road’, connected Montville's first gristmill, tanneries, and sawmill to numerous farms. The Dutch Reformed Church was shifted to Montville during the early 1800s post the land being bought for a parsonage.

The very first schoolhouse was developed in Montville in 1760 and several other schools were constructed in 1785, 1816, and 1852.
