History of Princeton NJ

The earliest inhabitants of Princeton NJ can be traced back to the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. During the later part of the 17th century, Europeans came to settle in the area, with Henry Greenland being the first European to find his home in Princeton NJ. The area was only known back then as a part of Stony Brook. It was in 1724 that the name “Princeton” was first used, and the place is known to have been named after King William III, Prince William of Orange of the House of Nassau. Another theory, however, states, that it was named after a landowner, Henry Prince, who was the son-in-law of a famous English merchant.
