History of Rumson NJ

Rumors suggest that the name of borough of Rumson comes from the fact that the land was bought by the early settlers in exchange for some rum from the Native Americans. It was known as ‘Navarumsunk’ by the Native Americans back in 1663. Some of the other names the borough was known as before being called ‘Rumson’ were Oceanic, Port Washington, and Black Point. Rumson was bought in parts by the English settlers, with the first purchase made in January 1665, with the rest being bought later during the same year.
