History of Short Hills NJ

Short Hills NJ was originally a part of Springfield Township, and is also known to have participated in the movement of the Continental Army during the Battle of Springfield under the guidance of George Washington. Although there was indeed the presence of troops in that particular area, it was in Metuchen New Jersey and Scotch Plains that the Battle of Short Hills took place.

Stewart Hartshorn bought 13 acres of land in Millburn Township, which is why the initiation of Short Hills took place as a planned community. His goal was to build a community where nature was not only appreciated, but would also not be destroyed or tarnished by the development of real estate projects. Looking at the topography of the area, “Short Hills” was decided as the name by Hartshorn, with the place having the same initials as his name.
