History of Summit, NJ

The land on which Summit currently lies was brought on 28th October, 1664 from the Native Americans. Summit was initially known as ‘Turkey Hill’ in order to not confuse it with ‘Turkey’, which is what New Providence was known as till 1759. Summit came to be known as ‘Beacon Hill’ during the American Revolutionary War. Although originally a part of Springfield Township, the latter was later divided into multiple municipalities, but Summit and New Providence remained attached.

The separation of Summit from New Providence took place in 1869, during which the incorporation of Summit took place as the ‘Township of Summit’. The city of Summit, which is what it is currently known as, was officially incorporated on 11th April, 1899. During the 19th century, the city of Summit NJ served as a getaway place for the New Yorkers who were looking for a peaceful spot for their summer vacations. The Calvary Episcopal Church, which was developed in 1894–95, was given the title of a "handsome new house of worship" by the New York Times.
