History of Westfield NJ

According to history, the name of the town, Westfield, was derived from the rich field located west of Elizabeth Town. The settlement of Westfield took place in 1699 due to the Clinker Lot Division. The downtown area of Westfield, which was known as the old village area in the earlier days, was settled as a part of the Elizabethtown Tract in 1720. Initially created as a township on 27th January, 1794, Westfield Township was replaced to officially incorporate Westfield as a town on 4th March, 1903.
