History of Easton, MA

The first settlement of Easton took place in 1694. It was in 1725 that Easton was officially incorporated. The first settler was named Clement Briggs, who had his home near the Easton Green. The transition from the Taunton North Purchase area to Norton took place in 1713 and Elder William Pratt was hired as the first minister of the town.

Before the establishment of the settlers, Native Americans occupied the area and used it for hunting and as a burial ground. During King Philip's War, Easton was the headquarters for King Philip’s troops. Benjamin Williams Tavern, which is the second oldest existing house in the town, is where General George Washington stayed during the Revolutionary War.

Much of Easton’s economy was shaped by the Ames family. Most of the landmark buildings in the town exist due to their contribution, having been designed by H. H. Richardson, who was the originator of the Richardsonian Romanesque style.
