History of Madison, NJ

Previously known as Bottle Hill, it was the Presbyterian Church that anchored the community of Madison in 1747. Presbyterians of Anglo-American stock, having migrated into Long Island, Elizabethtown, and Newark, were the earliest settlers of Madison NJ.
In order to encourage the education of the young men in the area, a private school was established during the early 19th century. This school was then named as Madison Academy, being named after James Madison, who was the 4th president of the United States. During the same period, a catholic church was constructed as well. It was in 1834 that the name of the borough was officially changed to “Madison”, owing to the efforts put in by the locals.
