History of Newton, MA

The initial settlement of Newton MA took place in 1630 as part of "the newe towne", which later on came to be known as Cambridge in 1638. Owing to the fear that they would be exploited by colonists, John Eliot, who was the minister of Roxbury, convinced the Native American people of Nonantum to relocate to Natick in the year 1651.
Newton was called Cambridge Village during its incorporation as a separate city on 15th December, 1681. Its name was changed to ‘Newton’ in 1691 before finally getting the name of ‘Newton’ in 1766. On 5th January, 1874, Newton became a city, and it’s now known as ‘The Garden City’.
