History of Walpole, MA

Walpole was created in May 1724 and was named after Sir Robert Walpole. The town had a role to play in the days that led up to the American Revolutionary War. After agreeing about the unfair taxes imposed by the British government, they sent their representative, Joshua Clapp, to the state meetings held at Boston’s Faneuil Hall. The aim of these meetings was to discuss how the residents would be kept safe during the American Revolutionary War.

The growth of Walpole was evident post the Revolutionary War. Mills began to be constructed during this time, especially on the Neponset River. These mills produced paper, lumber, and cotton, among other things. The Neponset River was also used for the purpose of transportation to the nearby towns of Medfield, Foxborough, and Sharon. The first public library in Walpole was established by Mary R. Bird in 1872.
