History of Wayland, MA

In 1638, Wayland went on to become the first settlement of Sudbury Plantation. The residents currently residing in Sudbury formed the western parish in 1714 and the residents of the current town of Wayland formed the eastern parish. Before Sudbury experienced the American Revolution, it had one of the biggest militias in the state of Massachusetts, coming up to about 400 military troops. While the Battles of Lexington and Concord were taking place on 19th April, 1775, almost 302 members of Sudbury’s militia marched to the town of Concord.

East Sudbury had its formal incorporation on 10th April, 1780 after it split away from the western parish. After conducting a town meeting, East Sudbury was renamed as Wayland on 11th March, 1835. This was done to honor Dr. Francis Wayland, who was a friend of local Judge Edward Mellen. Since both of them were big advocates of public libraries, they donated money to develop a public library for the town of Wayland. This is what made the Wayland Public library the first free public library in the state and also the second public library in the United States.
